2022 and We Still Remember Her

Sandra West Prowell may be gone but we will still remember her even in 2022. This past 2 years we have all reflected on the changes happening in our lives as we have had to adjust to new ways of doing things, seeing less of our friends, families and neighbors and even our work environment has changed. The one thing that authors have that may be different the rest of population is that they have always worked at home, away from the people, just typing away creating their own worlds. She is one of the many writers that I hope to emulate while I am writing my own fiction stories. She only had 3 books in her backlist, but they were and are fantastic reads. Now that I have settled (for the most part) from all of my travels I have purchased hardback editions of all three books to be able to pull down and enjoy every year.

There are not many articles written online about this author but a writing friend of hers did do a post on her own website in 2016. I have probably added some of that in one of my previous posts. However, I think it is appropriate to read it again. I have pulled one quote out that gets every fan’s heart pitter-patting.

Sandra’s books were nominated for many awards, the Dilys, a bookseller’s award, the Shamus, a private eye novel award, and the Hammett Award from the International Association of Crime Writers. Three books were published in the Phoebe Siegel series from Walker. Her voice was strong, funny, and unique. A fourth book, to be called ‘An Accepted Sorrow,’ was due out in 2000 or 2001 but wasn’t released. In an online interview in 2000 with CNN Book Chat she also discussed her stand-alone thriller, ‘Lap of God.’ We, her Montana writing friends, heard so much about this project. She was so excited about it, describing it as “about the rise of the Neo Nazis and the far right in Montana.” We all were excited. Like many of her projects it had come to her of apiece, in a flash of inspiration. We all looked forward to it.

No matter what transpired in her later life she did get three books published and to this day has a loyal fan base. It would be lovely to have more of her writings to share. If her family ever does, I hope they get in touch because we will be tweeting, posting, TikToking and have a grand old time with new material from this great lady. Hey, even getting the three books converted over to eBooks would be exciting news for us.
